How My Bad Back Was Slowly Ruining My Life

How My Bad Back Was Slowly Ruining My Life

I never thought something as simple as back pain could change the way I lived my entire life.

At first, it was just a dull ache in the morning.

I told myself it was nothing.

But then it started showing up in the little moments.

Getting out of bed became the first battle of the day.

I would sit on the edge of the mattress for a minute or two, bracing myself before I stood up because the sharp pain in my lower back would shoot down the moment I moved.

Some mornings I had to grab onto the dresser just to stand.

Walking to the bathroom felt like I had aged 20 years overnight.

Then it started affecting things outside the house.

I remember standing in line at the grocery store, pretending to look at my phone because I needed an excuse to lean against the cart for support.

Five minutes felt like forever.

By the time I got back to the car, my back was throbbing.

Driving became another struggle.

Even short trips left my lower back stiff and tight, and when I got out of the seat I had to stand there for a moment before I could start walking normally.

Family moments started changing too.

I stopped going on long walks with loved ones because I knew I’d be the one asking to sit down.

I remember being at a family gathering and watching everyone laugh and move around while I stayed seated most of the night because standing too long hurt too much.

That broke me.

The worst part was sleep.

No position felt comfortable.

I’d wake up in the middle of the night from the pain, toss and turn, then wake up exhausted and somehow even stiffer than before.

I stopped doing simple things I loved.

Less shopping.

Less cleaning.

Less sewing.

Less living.

It wasn’t just pain anymore.

It felt like my back was taking pieces of my life away.

Then I started paying attention to how badly I was slouching throughout the day.

Sitting on the couch.

Looking down at my phone.

Working at the table.

I decided to try a posture corrector to help support my back and remind me to sit and stand straighter.

Within time, I noticed less strain, less tension, and fewer moments where I had to stop what I was doing because of the pain.

It didn’t change everything overnight, but it gave me something I felt like I was losing:

my freedom to move.
