15 Mistakes People Over 70 Make With Their Digestion

15 Mistakes People Over 70 Make With Their Digestion

After talking with many folks in their 70s and 80s, I've noticed the same digestion mistakes popping up again and again. These aren't the obvious ones everyone talks about. Here are the ones that quietly cause the most trouble.

1. Drinking Cold Water With Meals

Many reach for ice water during dinner without thinking twice. But your stomach prefers room temperature or warm liquids after 70. Cold drinks can slow down digestion and make you feel bloated. Try switching to warm water with lemon and notice how much more comfortable you feel afterward.

2. Overusing Antacids

It's tempting to pop an antacid every time you feel a little heartburn. But doing this regularly can reduce the stomach acid you need to break down food properly. Many people end up with more bloating and discomfort in the long run. Consider talking to your doctor about gentler options.

3. Eating Large Dinners

Your digestive system naturally slows down in the evening. Having your biggest meal at night makes your body work overtime while you sleep. Try eating your largest meal earlier in the day and keeping dinner lighter. Many people report sleeping better and waking up less bloated.

4. Skipping the Chew

We're often in a hurry and don't chew our food enough. After 70, your digestive enzymes aren't as strong, so proper chewing becomes even more important. Try putting your fork down between bites. Your stomach will thank you for the extra help.

5. Eating Too Fast

Rushing through meals is common, especially if you live alone. But swallowing air while eating quickly leads to gas and discomfort. Make meals a relaxed experience. Even 20 minutes of calm eating can make a surprising difference in how you feel.

6. Ignoring Fermented Foods

Many completely skip yogurt, kefir, or sauerkraut. These foods help maintain the good bacteria your gut needs as you age. You don't need a lot. Just a few spoonfuls a few times a week can help things run more smoothly.

7. Drinking Coffee on an Empty Stomach

That first cup of coffee in the morning can irritate your digestive lining when there's no food in your stomach. Many people notice less acid reflux when they eat something small before their coffee. A banana or piece of toast makes a big difference.

8. Staying Seated Too Long After Eating

It's tempting to settle into your favorite chair right after a meal. But gentle movement helps food move through your system. Try a short 10-minute walk around the house or garden after meals. You'll notice less heaviness and better digestion.

9. Not Drinking Enough Water Between Meals

Many people cut back on water because they're worried about nighttime bathroom trips. But proper hydration between meals (not during) helps move things along. Aim for room temperature water throughout the day for the best results.

10. Eating the Same Foods Every Day

Getting stuck in a food rut means your gut bacteria get bored too. Try adding one new vegetable or different type of grain each week. Variety keeps your digestive system working well and helps prevent constipation.

11. Taking Medications Without Food

Certain medications can be hard on your stomach lining when taken on an empty stomach. Always check if your prescriptions should be taken with food. This small change can prevent a lot of unnecessary discomfort.

12. Ignoring Food Sensitivities

As we age, our bodies can become more sensitive to certain foods like dairy or wheat. Many people suffer for years before realizing a simple food is causing their bloating. Keeping a simple food diary for a week can reveal surprising triggers.

13. Eating Too Much Fruit at Once

Fruit is healthy, but having a large bowl at one sitting can cause gas and bloating after 70. Try spacing fruit out during the day rather than eating several pieces together. Your system handles smaller amounts much better.

14. Going to Bed Right After Eating

Lying down too soon after meals lets stomach acid flow upward more easily. Try staying upright for at least two hours after your last meal. Many people find their nighttime indigestion disappears with this simple timing change.

15. Stressing During Meals

Eating while worried or watching stressful news affects digestion more than most realize. Your body can't properly digest when it's in a stressed state. Try taking three deep breaths before each meal and eating without the TV on.

Which of these mistakes did you recognize in your own habits? Have you found something that helps your digestion after 70? I'd love to hear your experiences in the comments below.
