15 Mistakes People Over 60 Make With Digestion

Digestion changes as we get older, but many of us keep doing the same things we've always done. These common mistakes can leave you feeling bloated, uncomfortable, and even embarrassed. Here are 15 things to stop doing if you want to feel lighter and more comfortable after meals.

1. Drinking ice-cold water with meals

That big glass of ice water might feel refreshing, but it can slow down your digestion like putting ice on a fire. Your body has to warm it up first before it can work properly. Try room temperature or warm lemon water instead. Many people notice less bloating within a few days of making this small switch.

2. Skipping fermented foods completely

Your gut needs friendly bacteria to break down food properly. Without them, things get sluggish. You don't need fancy supplements — just a spoonful of sauerkraut, a little plain yogurt, or kefir can help your system work better. It's one of those small changes that really adds up.

3. Eating too fast while watching TV

When you're distracted, you swallow air and don't chew properly. This leads to that heavy, gassy feeling later. Try putting your fork down between bites and really tasting your food. Your stomach will thank you, and you'll probably eat less too.

4. Eating big meals late at night

Your digestive system slows down in the evening. A large dinner at 8pm often means discomfort at bedtime. Try moving your largest meal to midday and keeping dinner light. Many people sleep much better when they follow this simple rule.

5. Relying on antacids every day

While they give quick relief, using them regularly can mask bigger problems and affect how you absorb nutrients. Instead of reaching for the bottle, try a short walk after meals or chewing food more slowly first.

6. Ignoring food combinations

Some foods just don't digest well together. Fruit with a heavy meal, or lots of protein with lots of starch, can create chaos in your system. Try eating fruit between meals and see how much lighter you feel.

7. Sitting for hours after eating

Gravity helps move food through your system. When you sit on the couch right after lunch, everything slows down. A gentle 10-minute walk after meals can prevent that heavy, stuck feeling that many experience.

8. Drinking too much during meals

A little water is fine, but gulping large amounts while eating dilutes your digestive juices. Try sipping between bites rather than drinking a full glass with your meal. This small habit helps many people feel more comfortable.

9. Eating the same foods every single day

Your gut loves variety. Eating the exact same meals week after week can lead to sensitivities and poor digestion. Try adding one new vegetable or different grain each week to keep things moving smoothly.

10. Chewing gum for long periods

Constant chewing tells your stomach to produce acid even when there's no food coming. This can lead to discomfort and reflux. Save the gum for short periods only, especially after 60 when your system is more sensitive.

11. Not paying attention to meal timing

Eating at wildly different times every day confuses your digestive system. Your body loves routine. Try eating meals around the same times daily and you might notice much better digestion and less bloating.

12. Choosing low-fiber processed foods

White bread, sugary cereals, and packaged snacks give your gut very little to work with. The result is often constipation and discomfort. Adding simple high-fiber foods like oats, beans, and vegetables can change everything.

13. Eating when stressed or upset

When your body is in stress mode, digestion gets put on hold. Many of us eat while worried about family, money, or health. Try taking three deep breaths before meals to help your body switch into "rest and digest" mode.

14. Ignoring the urge to go

When nature calls, many of us wait "just a little longer." This trains your system to hold onto waste, leading to constipation. Respecting your body's signals is one of the kindest things you can do for your digestion.

15. Drinking coffee on an empty stomach

That first cup might feel like a morning ritual, but it can irritate your digestive lining when there's no food to buffer it. Try having a small bite of food first, or switch to tea some mornings. Your stomach will feel much calmer.

Which of these mistakes have you been making? Many of us do several without realizing it. Share your experience below — your story might help someone else feel better.
